The following illustration shows how to calculate the total thermal resistance of the cylinder through which a fluid is flowing with heat transfer coefficient h1 and another (or the same) fluid flowing outside the cylinder with outside heat transfer coefficient h2.
When there is another layer on the cylinder (suppose insulation) the conduction resistance of the layer is added to the above formula illustrated below:
