What is the meaning of head loss?

Ans: In fluid flows, head loss due to friction inherently tells about the pressure drop. Pressure is nothing but a form of energy that drives the fluid. The drop in pressure means more pumping (or compression in case of gases) is required. Pump use energy from other prime movers (electricity, diesel engines generator, etc) and it costs money/fuel.

Keeping the head loss to minimum value is thus very important.
