Steam Rate/ Specific Steam Consumption

What is the steam rate?

The rate of steam flow (kg/h) required to produce unit shaft output (1 kW).

or in other words what amount of steam should be continuously fed into the turbine so that it produces 1 kJ of work per second.

Steam rate is also called specific steam consumption.

ree

(Net work is nothing but the difference between turbine work and pump work.

3600 seconds = 1 hour)

What is the significance?

The lower the steam rate the less amount of coal is required to produce unit power.
