What is work producing device and what is work consuming device according to thermodynamics?

Answer: Work producing device is one that converts heat input into thermodynamic work output. These devices convert the supplied energy into work and this work can be further used to generate electricity or driving of the wheels.

Examples of work-producing devices in Thermodynamics are steam turbines, gas turbines, piston-cylinder assemblies, etc

On the other hand, work-consuming devices transfer fluid from one place to another place (usually from low pressure to high pressure), and increase pressure, by using work input provided to them.

Examples of work-consuming devices are pumps, compressors, etc.

The system which produces work is called the work-producing system. examples include steam power plants, gas power plants, IC engines, etc

The systems which take in work input and produce a cooling effect or transfer heat from a cold reservoir to a hot reservoir are called work-consuming devices. examples are refrigeration systems, heat pumps, air conditioning systems, etc
