Why thermal efficiency of the Otto cycle is always greater than the Diesel cycle for the same compression ratio?

Answer:

As it can be seen from above, the term in the bracket is the difference between the Otto and the diesel cycle. This term is always greater than 1. Therefore, for the same compression ratio 'r', the thermal efficiency of the Otto cycle is higher than the Diesel cycle.

In reality, though, the Diesel cycles operate at much higher compression ratios and prove to be more efficient.
