What is the effect of temperature on the viscosity of liquids?

Ans: The viscosity of the liquids decreases with temperature.

temperature vs viscosity of liquids

Reason:

  1. In liquids, the viscosity is majorly due to strong intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules.

  2. Liquid molecules possess more energy at high temperatures and they can oppose large cohesive intermolecular forces of attraction as temperature increases.

  3. As a result at high temperatures, the liquid molecules move freely.

Andrade's equation gives the relationship between temperature and viscosity in liquids.
