What is an open system?

Answer: A system that has:


  1. The volume of fixed size containing matter

  2. Mass flows across boundaries (in or out of the control volume)

  3. Energy flows(in the form of work or heat)


An open system is also called a control volume. Examples of open systems are,

Nozzle, Turbine, Pump, Compressor, Heat Exchanger, etc
